California Dreaming: A Balanced Getaway in Oxnard or San Diego for All Travelers

Planning a trip that has moments of luxury and practicality while accommodating individuals on and off the autism spectrum might seem challenging, but California’s coastal cities of Oxnard and San Diego offer the perfect blend.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful coastal retreat or a vibrant experience by the shore, both cities deliver unique perks that make them ideal destinations for a vacation that’s comfortable, enriching, and enjoyable for everyone.

Oxnard: The Coastal Retreat

Why Oxnard?

Oxnard, a hidden gem on the California coast only 40 minutes south of Santa Barbara, is a haven for those seeking a serene environment with the charm of a small town and the beauty of stunning beaches. This city is perfect for a staycation or a low-key escape that doesn’t compromise on quality.

Getting There

By Car: Oxnard is about 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles and can be reached in about 1.5 to 2 hours via the US-101 North. If you’re coming from Santa Barbara, it’s a 40-minute drive south on the US-101 South. Travelers from San Francisco can expect a drive of approximately 5 to 6 hours.

By Train: The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner offers a scenic coastal train ride from Los Angeles Union Station to Oxnard, with several daily departures. The journey takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. Pro tip: Trains can sometimes be of special interest to people on and off the spectrum. However, if this is the first time on a train, we wouldn’t advise unless you have more hands on deck for any unexpected hiccups. A good way to build up to that point would be a day trip on a Metro rail.

By Plane: Oxnard is accessible from several nearby airports. The closest is Santa Barbara Airport (SBA), located about 50 miles north of Oxnard, which is about a 45-minute drive away. Alternatively, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is about 60 miles away, and Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) is also an option at approximately 60 miles from Oxnard. From any of these airports, you can rent a car or use shuttle services to reach Oxnard.

Where to Stay

Hotels

Zachari Dunes on Mandalay Beach by Hilton: This oceanfront resort is known for its luxurious yet relaxed vibe. It features spacious suites, a beautiful pool area, and direct beach access. Families can enjoy a variety of on-site activities, including bike rentals and water sports. When it works, take advantage of the on-site spa or enjoy a beachfront cocktail.

Homewood Suites by Hilton Oxnard/Camarillo: Located just a short drive from the beach, this all-suite hotel offers the convenience of an equipped kitchen (great to have a full-sized fridge for food/home prep and leftovers, but please note that some locations do not have a real oven), separate living areas with a pull-out couch, two TVs, extra bedding and complimentary breakfast. The hotel has an outdoor pool, basketball court, and evening socials, providing a homey atmosphere suitable for both families and adult travelers looking for a comfortable, extended stay.

Pro tip: The nearby Camarillo Outlets is a great destination for a shopaholic respite moment! From Gucci to Crocs, there are options for everyone.

Airbnbs: If you need to prepare a diet and have safe foods on hand, then an Airbnb with a kitchen (and a washer and dryer) might be more accommodating than a hotel room. Oxnard’s Airbnb offerings range from cozy beachfront cottages to budget-friendly apartments near the marina. These spaces are perfect for families and small groups, offering privacy and the comforts of home.

Resorts with Pool Day Passes

For our Airbnb friends, don’t sleep on the pool day passes!

If you’re in the mood for a resort experience, consider spending a day at Zachari Dunes on Mandalay Beach, which offers a day pool pass for $60 for a luxurious day by the water.

A favorite of ours is ResortPass where you can easily book day access to the best resort pools and amenities without an overnight stay.

Healthy Eats and Boutique Health Food Stores

Oxnard prides itself on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, making healthy eating a breeze. For a quick bite, The Honey Cup Coffeehouse & Creamery offers organic coffee, gluten-free pastries, and a variety of smoothies. For a more substantial meal, try Red Tandem Brewery, which offers a menu featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients and plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options.

For grocery needs, in addition to Whole Foods Market and Sprouts Farmers Market, check out Lassen’s Natural Foods & Vitamins. This boutique health food store provides a curated selection of organic produce, supplements, and specialty items perfect for the health-conscious traveler.

DoorDash

For those who prefer the convenience of food delivery, DoorDash in Oxnard connects you with a wide array of restaurants offering everything from acai bowls to paleo options. A couple of good paleo options include Urban Plates, which offers grass-fed steak, salmon, or chicken, or The Whole Bowl, which offers paleo bowls. Smashburger is great for a burger/fries option, and Topper’s Pizza satisfies pizza cravings.

Zoos, Gardens, and Stretch Stops

If you’re driving south to Oxnard, consider stopping at the Santa Barbara Zoo along the way. (Buy tickets online and request accommodations needed in advance to avoid long lines!) It’s a great place to stretch your legs and enjoy some fresh air.

MAJOR INCLUSION ALERT: The Santa Barbara Zoo appears to be getting with the program!

The Zoo earned their Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation in 2018, and since then has extended their efforts to welcome all guests.

Santa Barbara Zoo created a summer event, Autism Safari Nights, where parents can drop off their kids at the Zoo’s sensory room while parents get a much-deserved break and have opportunities to meet new friends navigating autism.

Once in Oxnard, a good place to relax and enjoy a stroll is Heritage Square, a charming spot with historic homes, gardens, and quiet walking paths. For those looking for more greenery and trails, the Conejo Valley Botanic Garden in Thousand Oaks is a short 20-minute drive away and offers beautiful trails and native plant species to explore.

Regardless of what activities you choose, having a visual itinerary/schedule with the option to opt-out for another day (or trip) sometimes makes all the difference.

For grocery shopping, in addition to Jimbo’s…Naturally! and Lazy Acres Market, visit Ocean Beach People’s Organic Food Market, a local cooperative offering a wide range of organic products and hard-to-find specialty items.

DoorDash

When it comes to food delivery, type in “organic food” in the search bar of Doordash and you’ll be surprised what comes up. Organic/paleo food is plentiful in Southern California!

Try Flower Child for organic, health-focused dishes with paleo-friendly options, or Grains Café for wholesome, plant-based meals like grain bowls, fresh salads, and gluten-free dishes. Both offer delivery through DoorDash, ensuring you have access to nutritious meals without leaving your accommodation.

Planning is everything: call ahead to make room for the accommodations your travelers will need, setting the expectation with the zoo to support you in advance for a successful venture.

Once in San Diego, the iconic San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park offer a perfect combination of gardens, museums, and animal exhibits, making it an ideal destination for a day of exploration.

With some smooth preparation, you could have a laid-back picnic before, after, or even instead of these options. As we mentioned, calling ahead to make clear accommodations necessary for your family is crucial. It’s ok to be pushy in a nice way and communicate your needs upfront. Remember, it’s your right!
